Toho Seed

Omega-6 fatty acids in seed oil borage has been shown in clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory and the ability to reduce certain effects of arthritis, allowing some individuals to take lower doses of drugs against pain. Known as "good fats, omega-6 fatty acids may also be useful in treating many other conditions, promote the healthy growth of hair and skin to improve brain growth and function. Essential fatty acids, including omega-6 fatty acids are necessary for human health, but not produced in the body if the supplements, especially those containing healthy concentrations of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), are a excellent way to achieve this important food component. The oil from borage seeds (derived from the seeds of Borago officinalis) contains some of the most high levels of GLA of any oil seed.

While studies have not been ambitious, the effects of the GLA should not be reduced. Although most omega-6 fatty acids are consumed with vegetable oils, compounds are also present in a number of plants unique. GLA is abundant in the seed oil of borage, evening primrose oil and seed oil of black currant. Evening primrose has been used by Natives and later used in Europe to treat many ailments, including joint pain and swelling. The seed oil borage, however, is the most high count of GLA of any oil.

Some forms of GLA is broken down into arachidonic acid (AA, which itself may be consumed directly the meat) and eicosanoids, this form have the potential to cause inflammation, thrombosis, allergic reactions, increased blood pressure and cell proliferation. However, if the GLA is regarded as a supplement, it is transformed into dihomogamma linolenic acid or DGLA, which neutralizes the effect that AA has on the body. Thanks to a supplement, the GLA can also be transformed into prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) which may contribute to smoother the blood and soothe the pain and swelling. When GLA supplements are taken in conjunction with a healthy diet rich in nutrients, the odds of AA are produced very low, and anti-inflammatory properties of GLA and DGLA are apparent.

Most people eat diets rich in omega-6 fatty acids, because they are common in normal vegetable oils for cooking such as canola, cottonseed, peanut and safflower, however, the GLA derived from oil borage seed, in the form of a supplement of essential fatty acids, is much more beneficial. Although still under study, seed oil, borage has been shown to help not only inflammatory conditions, but also help prevent high cholesterol, irritation skin, menstrual pain and fatigue, while some data suggest that the GLA oil from borage seeds may contribute to preventing cancer.

Borage seed oil is available in both liquid and gel capsule forms. The recommended dosage of GLA for arthritis pain is about 1800 mg per day. Effects on arthritis and other inflammatory conditions may take 1-3 months to occur. In a six-month placebo-controlled study, patients given GLA supplementation with seed oil borage showed improvement in grip strength, joint stiffness and inflammatory pain. For optimal absorption, do not forget to include omega-6 essential fatty acids through food healthy, rich in fruits, vegetables, heart healthy lean protein and whole grains.
