When collecting Japanese netsuke most ancient of netsuke true, as many cons of modern copies, will normally have two holes connecting cord (called himotoshi), but it will be much bigger than the other!
The netsuke was a bit of handling, which was on a rope to a compartment (sagemono), often it was an inro (one of several compartments), which was kept closed by a wire cord (ojime) between inro and netsuke. The kimono had no pockets so the INRO was worn suspended from kimono belt (OBI), the netsuke was then pushed under frame and trap and maintain sagemono up.
The reason for the larger hole in the netsuke was that once the cord has been threaded through the inro (or sagemono) and Ojima (the netsuke was then strung on the top), it was possible to completely hide one and knot cord just inside the hole wider.
Thus, as the small holes connected to the larger hole was very well formed, providing a link smooth curves that was easy to put on the rope. Often, the biggest hole was dug further, below the surface, to provide plenty of space for the node.
The Manju often used instead of a netsuke, was also plenty of room to hide node in the opening two sections.
In my personal opinion, although there are some very fine netsuke that were being scored by tail or leg, instead of the usual himotoshi there was any disadvantage when in use, as there was any way to hide the knot of the cord.
Another important factor is the position of himotoshi such, they are always placed so that the cord hangs the netsuke carving is beautifully presented and common sense. But these holes cord have also been placed in such a way that does not harm any of the detailed carving.
Many poor later netsuke (these have never been used, but they were really done simply to cash, on the increasing value of netsuke) are often easy to spot. If you watch a netsuke holes if both are of equal size and poorly trained (often these are only two holes drilled at an angle towards the other), you can be sure this is not a good netsuke!
Unfortunately we can no longer rely solely on judging the himotoshi identify a modern copy, as some do now have holes smaller and larger, including copies of recent resin of netsuke.
